Pleanáil agus eolas Bliain 6

A chairde,

Tá súil agam go raibh Cáisc slán suaimhneach agaibh ar fad. Is é feidhm an litir seo ná chun an plean nua don Ardteist a phlé agus an plean atá againn don téarma deireanach a roinnt libh.

We hope that we find you all in good health, that Easter went well for everyone and that you are coping well with our unusual and unnatural new way of life.

On Good Friday the Minister for Education, Joe McHugh made some very significant announcements with regard to the State Examinations. These announcements were unprecedented to fit the unprecedented situation the country finds itself in. The Department of Education were in a position where any decision they took was going to be far from ideal for this year’s Leaving Certificate students and this has certainly turned out to be the case.

The plan announced to delay the Leaving Certificate examinations by a month and a half has caused a great deal of stress and anxiety for our 6th year students and all our school staff feel for them at this time. A week on from the announcements there is still a huge amount of confusion and questions that remain unanswered with regard to how this new plan announced will work. As the weeks go by I am sure greater clarity will be given.

I will not address or attempt to answer the various concerns and questions in this letter as it would not be possible at this stage. All we can do at this stage is plan and work our way out of this. We will focus on the things we can do together to ensure that we are well prepared for the road ahead.

I have a meeting with the KWETB network of Principals on Tuesday morning 21/4. This meeting will be chaired by the CE Deirdre Keyes and Director of Schools Rory O Toole. There will be an in-depth discussion about the recent announcements and after that I will hopefully have some more clarity on the details of the plan for July/August. Later on that evening I am organising a meeting with our 6th years through Microsoft Teams: Tuesday evening 21/4 at 18.00 to discuss the whole situation with them. The meeting will also be attended by Leas-Phríomhoide Eibhlín and Class teachers Rebekah and Laura. In advance of this meeting I want to encourage the students to send me any questions they may have in an email or in our 6th year Team discussion forum. We will not have all the answers but will certainly do our best to address the concerns students may have during this meeting. We encourage all students to attend.

So much of what is happening is completely out of the control of the school, the students and their families. The best way forward is to deal with the things we have control over between now and the end of August.

In the short-term this is the plan school management have decided on which is line with the rough guidance provided by Department to date:

-Teachers will continue to teach remotely to finish courses and revise over work done from April 20th until May 29th.

-On May 29th which is 6 weeks away it is suggested at that stage that teachers and students take a two week break from classes.

-From mid-June the Minister has suggested that students begin to prepare for the examinations again by which time a timetable is expected to be finalised.

-Teachers will be available remotely to answer questions students might have or guide them in their studies.

-It is then planned that by early July students and teachers will return to a school setting to make the final preparations for the examinations. This is the part of the plan that is most unclear at this stage and we will await clarification on a number of issues surrounding this before attempting to discuss how it will work. Whatever structure is decided for this period rest assured the staff of GCM will do all in our power to support the needs of the students.

As a team we have reviewed the first three week period of remote teaching and learning and we are hoping to develop and improve our methods as we go along. We wish to stress to parents and students that remote teaching and learning will never be a substitute for a normal face to face school environment but until we can return to that scenario we will all work as hard as we can with the resources available to us. Again control the controllable and try to avoid getting overly stressed regarding forces outside of our control.

We greatly regret all the end of year events that would be a normal part of the final weeks and months of 6th year that will now not happen because of this crisis. However we are fully committed to organising a proper graduation ceremony for the students whenever possible beyond August/September.

While it is a very difficult time for students we wish to reassure them that they will get to where they want to go in life despite this crisis. They will overcome this challenge by working together and with the support of the school and their families- ‘Ar scáth a chéile a mhairimid níos mó ná riamh.’

We want to acknowledge and thank you all for the great parental support we have received to date during this crisis and we ask you to continue to support your son/daughter in their work in the months to come.

Le gach deá-ghuí,

Tony Ó Murchú
