Measúnu Bliain 3 19/20

A Thuismitheoir/Caomhnóir dhíl

Tá súil agam go bhfuil sibh ar fad slán agus folláin. Is é feidhm an litir seo ná chun na pleananna atá againn le haghaidh measúnú Bliain a 3 a roinnt libh.

A number of weeks have now passed since the Department of Education announcements on Good Friday regarding the cancellation of the Junior Cert/Cycle examinations. Since then there has been a great deal of confusion as to what assessments 3rd years across the country will have. This confusion surrounding the plans for 3rd year assessment has led to unnecessary stress and anxiety during a time when there is plenty of this already.

Finally we have some clarity of what the plans are and we are satisfied that the plans announced are sensible ones. Schools are being allowed to design their own assessments for 3rd years at the end of this school year. This will mean that students can finish working and studying at the end of May and while they won’t have their formal examinations this year, the assessments we have planned will provide some closure before a well-deserved break in the summer.

School management and staff have been meeting and consulting in the last few days and weeks to plan for this eventuality and below here are the details of the assessments planned.

It is important to note that the objective of these assessments is to provide a structured and formal end to this school year. These assessments are not intended to increase the stress levels of students at an already difficult time and that is why we are structuring them differently from other years.

Remote Examinations/ Tests:

Every subject is different particularly taking into account our current learning environment. As a result we are allowing each department to decide whether some form a ‘remote’ exam is appropriate as part of their assessment. Obviously these will be remote examinations and could be open book tests or short questions arranged through Microsoft Forms or another platform like it. We will be arranging a timetable for these examinations in the last week of term May 25-29th. Again not all subjects will have a test as part of their assessment. Teachers will communicate the plans with students. To allow for these tests to take place normal classes will finish on May 22nd. An examination timetable will be organised in the coming weeks and published on our website.

Other assessment methods:

Teachers will be combining a range of different assessment models. Some teachers will set students a task each week between now and the end of term. These tasks will be graded and the grades will go towards the final assessment mark.

Teachers may also use continuous assessment taking into account the work done since the start of this school year. We feel that assessing students in various ways and taking a number of factors into account is a fairer way to assess students at the end of this year with the unusual last few months we have had.

Report and results

It is our intention that as normal we will use the Vsware system to publish the final Summer assessments. Teachers will begin to work on corrections and calculations at the end of the year when all assessments are completed and the final reports will be available on Vsware. The publication of these reports will be communicated with parents at the time. It is important to note that these assessment results will be ‘in school results’ and will not be referred to as the Junior Certificate or Cycle results as they are not taking place this year. The Department also announced today that they will be issuing a ‘Certificate of Completion’ to students who completed the Junior Cycle in each school. This Certificate will not have results on it but will confirm that the students completed the three year Cycle. This Certificate will be issued to schools sometime early in the next school year. Here is a link to the details of today’s announcement - Link

Teachers will communicate the plan they have for assessment with the students in the coming days and weeks. Please continue to support the work being done at home and encourage your son/daughters to engage fully with the assessments for the last few weeks. Students of 3rd year can now focus on finishing out the year with a month of hard work safe in the knowledge that they will be on holidays from the start of June.

We greatly appreciate the understanding and support of parents and students during this time.

Le gach deá-ghuí,

Tony Ó Murchú
