An Ardteistiméireacht 2020

A Thuismitheoir/Caomhnóir dhíl,

Scríobhaim chugaibh arís chun an athrú is déanaí tagtha ón ngéarchéim Covid 19 a phlé.

The year 2020 will be forever remembered the world over for the devastating impact the Covid 19 virus has had on the lives of billions. At school level nationally and locally in Gaelcholáiste na Mara the normal routines of a school year have been thrown into disarray since March 12th. Undoubtedly the group most impacted by this have been our 6th years.

It is clear that the Department of Education have found the planning of the Leaving Certificate examinations a very challenging situation. To say the Department have been inconsistent and indecisive during the last few months would be putting it mildly. Despite this we are where we are now and while frustrations are running high amongst students and teachers the time has come to look forward and implement the plan outlined to us last Friday.

We now know that students will not sit the Leaving Certificate examinations this summer as has happened every year since their introduction. The Department have decided to provide students with the option of taking calculated grades this year instead of sitting the Leaving Certificate examinations at some stage in the next year. We are working off the assumption that all students wish to take the option of receiving these calculated grades for now and in the event of a student being unhappy with the final grades that the option of sitting the examinations sometime in the next year is available to them.

The system of calculated grades announced by the DES is an unprecedented one for this country. While the overall concept is a straightforward one it is the finer details of this approach that educators, students and parents countrywide are now becoming familiar with. I am attaching the guidance document published by the DES- A guide to calculated grades

I am also attaching here the FAQ document issued by the Department which provides answers to some of the questions you may have- FAQ-Calculated grades

While a lot of questions are answered in those documents there are also a number of other issues that need further clarification and we await this in the coming days.

The school will obviously be adhering to these guidelines and in-depth discussion and planning has taken place amongst staff since the announcement. I have also attended meetings of the KWETB Network in recent days. Staff and management understand and acknowledge that some students will be very comfortable with the idea of receiving calculated grades while others might feel that this system will not suit them. It is important to note that there is no form of assessment that suits every learner equally. Every form of assessment has its strengths and weaknesses and calculated grades is no different.

The staff of GCM take the increased responsibility now bestowed on them very seriously and we will endeavour to carry out our calculations in such a way that considers the continuous assessments completed by students in recent years while also aiming to take into account the potential of students to peak for the end of 6th year and the Leaving Certificate examinations. Every student in 6th year has a different profile and they learn, engage and perform in different ways. We in GCM know our students and we wish to assure parents and students that the knowledge we have gained over the past six years will be to the forefront when decisions are taken in the coming weeks and months.

The very nature of in-house calculated grades means that communication between students/parents and teachers/school management must be treated carefully in the coming weeks. I have already attempted to clarify some issues for some parents and students in the last few days. Going forward and to be fair to all concerned communication between the teaching staff and our 6th years will be coming to a natural conclusion in the coming week. To facilitate this, classes and work being submitted will be brought to a close in the coming days. Teachers may wish to have a farewell class with some groups or tie up some loose ends and that is fine and appropriate. Also please note that class teachers and management will still be available to support students from a pastoral perspective. Time and space is now required to allow for proper consideration for the job in hand.

Please consult the FAQ document which should answer most questions parents and students have. If you have a genuine question that you need to speak to school management about please email- For obvious reasons the nature of this communication cannot be related to the possible calculated grade your son/daughter will receive or queries of that nature. We thank you for your understanding on this. We ask you to trust us to carry out this task with professionalism and discretion.

School management will be meeting with Bliain 6 tomorrow evening to discuss everything and to generally touch base with the group. We have been robbed of the opportunity to arrange a graduation for this group but we want to assure parents and students that we look forward to arranging this occasion as soon as the public health advice allows us to do so after the Summer.

I will update parents and students via communication through the website if further information or clarity is given on the calculated grades system and the planning for the issuing of results and so on.

I thank you again for your support and patience during this trying time on us all.

Le meas agus gach deá-ghuí

Tony Ó Murchú
